Thanks for the coverage Mike McLaine.
Supposedly the two starting safeties for the Browns returned to practice Monday after recovering from hamstring injuries.
It was assumed that T.J. Ward and Usama Young would be the starters once healthy, but Mike Adams has another take. He's giving Ward the starting job at strong safety, but he's not about to make it easy with Young at free safety.
"Everybody is acting surprised that I'm starting or getting the opportunity to play," Adams said. "I want everyone to understand that if you have questions for the new guys, go check my film and see what I've been doing in the past.
"I don't go out there to make mistakes. I go out there to make plays. Everybody who thinks we need a free safety, that's fine. I welcome all challenges. I compete every play. I'm pushing it to the limit. I'm not making it easy on any coaches to make a decision whether I'll start or the next person starts."
Adams opened with a statement that lasted more than one minute before he was asked questions by reporters. He followed Ward and Young in the interview line after Monday's practice.
Adams started 34 of 98 game appearances in seven previous seasons (three with the San Francisco 49ers and the last four with the Browns). He's always been considered valuable because of his ability to play both safety spots, cornerback and nickel back.
The problem, as far as Adams sees it, is that his versatility doesn't equate to being a starter. He's the guy that can do a little bit of everything, but he's perhaps not good enough at one thing to gain the trust of coaches.
"Versatility can either hurt me or help me," Adams said. "I think it helps me because it helps me stay on the team. It hurts me because every year it's like, 'Oh, we need a free safety.' Everybody forgets about Mike Adams.
"Everybody forgets that's what I do. I don't want to be that guy who's like, 'He's not good enough to start, but he's good enough to start when you get hurt.' I can play the game. Right now I'm zeroing in on free safety, and that's what I'm going to do."
Young's case for starting took a hit when he injured a hamstring the day before the first preseason game. He missed all three games and was out of practice until he did individual and some team drills Monday.
He's not happy with the way fate has played out in camp. He was signed to be a starter, and now he's not sure if he will get the call when the season opens.
"In football you lose a lot when the other guys are out there and going through the dog days of training camp," Young said. "When it's all said and done, I'm ready to bounce back. As soon as I get to 100 percent, it's all out."
Since Young probably won't play against the Chicago Bears in the final preseason game, he'll go into the regular season without any game action under his belt. Having signed with the Browns in free agency shortly before camp opened also works against his cause.
"I'll leave that up to the coaches," Young said. "I'll go out in practices and we'll see from there."
Coach Pat Shurmur raised the prospect of Adams starting before Monday's practice.
"He's more than just a backup type of player right now," Shurmur said. "Until the other guys come back, he's our starter, and he may still be."
Getting the call against the Cincinnati Bengals would be great news for Adams, who's always carried a chip on his shoulder.
"I welcome all competition," Adams said. "Ever since I've been in the league a team has brought someone in to replace Mike Adams. It's hard to replace Mike Adams. They should have a Mike Adams award. My job is to make it hard for coach Shurmur and (defensive coordinator) Dick (Jauron)."
