Day 2 of the 2nd Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka is currently being played at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand. The hosts won the 1st Test match against Sri Lanka and restricted the Lions’ chances of making it to the World Test Championship final.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first in the 2nd Test. But the Lions’ decision to do so might have backfired for them as New Zealand’s batsman could not stop scoring runs in the first innings. In 123 overs, the Kiwis smashed 580 runs with both Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls smashing double centuries.

Williamson scored a stunning 215-run knock off 296 balls, ultimately getting deceived in Prabhat Jayasuriya’s over. As for Nicholls, he stayed not out till the end of New Zealand’s first innings, scoring 200 runs in 240 balls, with as many as 15 fours and 4 sixes coming off of his bat.

Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha was the pick of the bowlers from his side as he collected 2 wickets in the 32 overs he bowled. Other wicket takers for Sri Lanka included Prabhat Jayasuriya and Dhananjaya De Silva, who each got 1 wicket under their belt.

New Zealand’s Devon Conway also played a key role in putting up a massive score for Sri Lanka to chase. He smashed 78 runs in 108 balls, with as many as 13 fours to his name. The Black Caps are expected to seal not just a win in the 2nd Test, but also whitewash the series against Sri Lanka. What now remains to be seen is whether Sri Lanka can still pull off a comeback and draw level the Test series against New Zealand.
