India middle order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) and the World Test Championship finals. This could be a major blow for India and his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who had built their team around him with Iyer being the captain. Iyer was the most expensive buy for the franchise with a price tag of INR 12.5 Cr but now it seems that the money has gone to waste.

Iyer, who had pulled out of the third ODI match against Sri Lanka due to stiff back, was drafted for the second Test match against Australia. However, the recurring problem ensured that Iyer was once again ruled out. According to a report in The Times of India, Iyer could be sent to London for the surgery.

"Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated by a specialist in London, but if there is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also," TOI quoted a source in the know as saying.

Iyer, is one of the premier batters in Indian team. The 28-year-old is expected to take the team forward in the coming future. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav had a great opportunity to make his case for the 2023 ODI World Cup, but the Mumbai batter failed to make the most of it, getting out for cheap scored for both the occasions.

Coming back to Iyer, it seems the injury too severe to be ignored. The 28-year-old wants to get operated upon by some surgeon in London, but BCCI feels that he can do the operation in India if he finds an able surgeon in the country itself.

Meanwhile, this is not the only blow for India. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah has also been ruled out of the upcoming IPL. Moreover, he has been ruled out of the WTC Final as well which will be played between India and Australia from June 7 at the Oval.
